Excellence in School Sports
The vision for the Excellence in School Sport Programme (ESSP) is to provide a co-ordinated and planned approach to high quality sports coaching for talented and aspiring pupils, during curricular and extra-curricular school, as part of a balanced curriculum.
The programme aims to help our most talented sporting pupils to achieve their full potential by accessing opportunities for high quality training within West Lothian. We also hope that our talented sports pupils can assist to aspire other pupils and help create a strong and vibrant sporting ethos within secondary schools.
High quality specialist coaches and additional experts in strength and conditioning, nutrition, sport psychology and physiotherapy will deliver the programme with guidance from the appropriate governing bodies of sport, East of Scotland Institute of Sport and West Lothian Council Sports Development Team.
The programme is managed by the Excellence in School Sport Programme Management Board which is made up of members representing Headteachers, P.E. Teachers, Sportscotland, Scottish Governing Bodies of Sport, East of Scotland Institute of Sport and West Lothian Council Sports Development Team.
To apply for the programme, applicants must complete and return an ESSP Application Form. These can be collected from your P.E Teacher. Your P.E. Teacher will be able to advise you on when ESSP opens and closes for applications.
The school also actively participates in West Lothian’s Champions in Schools programme, where adult elite athletes work with pupils, aiming to motivate them to participate in sport and to lead a healthy lifestyle.
