Debating Club

The debating club is open to all pupils from S1-6 and runs on a Thursday lunchtime in Miss Sword’s room (115). The pupils have the opportunity to learn about different debating formats, as well as learning important skills such as persuasive language and the ability to rebut others’ views in a constructive manner. The club has entered many competitions and individual members have received several accolades for their efforts. We research current issues from several different angles and hold practice debates regularly. Recent topics have included wind energy, internet censorship and congestion charging in Scottish cities. It is a lively and interesting club to be a part of, and members have the opportunity to visit other schools and even the Scottish Parliament to try their hand at debating. Come along on a Thursday lunchtime or see Miss Sword for more details.

Compass Café

Compass Café has been running in Whitburn Academy since 2001. It is a friendly lunchtime club for pupils in S1 to S6. At present, over 30 pupils are members. The club is held in Room 213 every Tuesday. It begins at 1.05pm and runs until 1.50 pm.

It is run by one of the school chaplains, Stevie Roy, who has built up an excellent relationship with pupils since they were in primary school. Stevie is ably supported by Mary Roy.

Compass Café is a welcoming place to be at lunchtime. Pupils eat and chat, then play games such as Guess Who? and Empires, or watch Trailer of the Week. During the last ten minutes of Compass Café, pupils discuss a thought-provoking topic.  Themes we have considered include ‘God in the Movies’ and ‘Lifestyle’.

In Activities Week we run a 3 day residential trip to Auchenfoyle Christian Campsite in Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire. This is crammed full of activities like indoor archery, race the plastic ducks, cake decorating, cycling round the Isle of Cumbrae, watching films, playing table tennis, pool, air hockey, quizzes, table football, water fights, singing, and Bible based discussions. Pupils stay in luxury wooden chalet accommodation and the food is great!

Any interested pupils are welcome to come along to Compass Café and see if they like it.
