Biology

Biology qualifications allow learners to investigate the applications of biology in society and the environment. These qualifications cover relevant and contemporary areas of biology, while allowing learners to develop an understanding of the underlying themes.

The school offers Biology at the following levels:

S3 Biology

In S3 Biology pupils will study three units:

1.Interdependence-3 HW’s

2.Growth, development and behaviour-3 HW’s

3.Biotechnology-3 HW’s

Learners experience

Each of these units will underpin knowledge and understanding required for the National qualifications (N3-N5). These courses will help develop problem solving and data interpretation skills as well as skills for life, learning and work.

Assessment tasks:

For each unit there will be a unit assessment, scientific investigation as well as homework tasks which will help pupils to consolidate and apply their knowledge of the unit content.

Homework tasks:

  • Knowledge recall questions
  • Application of knowledge questions
  • Data interpretation
  • Presentation of data eg: line graphs, tables
  • Simple calculations eg: ratios, averages, percentages and percentage change

Homework will be issued at appropriate times within the course to support pupils’ learning. Pupils will be given adequate time to complete all homework tasks. It is expected that pupils should complete homework on time and to a high standard.

National 4 Biology

In S4/S5 Biology pupils will study three units within each National course 1.Life on Earth 2.Cell Biology 3.Multicellular organisms Learners experience Each of these units will underpin knowledge and understanding required for the National qualifications (N3-N5). These courses will help develop problem solving and data interpretation skills as well as skills for life, learning and work.

Assessment tasks: For each unit there will be a unit assessment, as well as homework tasks which will help pupils to consolidate and apply their knowledge of the unit content.

  • Homework tasks: Based on Key area topics
  • Knowledge recall questions • Application of knowledge questions
  • Data interpretation
  • Presentation of data eg: line graphs, tables
  • Simple calculations eg: ratios, averages, percentages and percentage change
  • Revision for Unit assessments (UASPS)-Unit assessments must be passed in order for pupils to achieve the required national level.

Homework will be issued at appropriate times within the course to support pupils’ learning. Pupils will be given adequate time to complete all homework tasks. It is expected that pupils should complete homework on time and to a high standard.

National 4 qualifications are not graded, but will be assessed as pass or fail.
