Chemistry

Chemistry qualifications cover a variety of contexts relevant to chemistry’s impact on the environment and society through the chemistry of the Earth’s resources, the chemistry of everyday products and environmental analysis.

The school offers Chemistry at the following levels:

S3 Chemistry

In S3 Chemistry pupils will study three units:

1. Lab Skills and Chemical Analysis -3 HW’s

2. Elements of Life -3 HW’s

3.Earth’s Resources -3 HW’s

Learners experience

Each of these units will underpin knowledge and understanding required for the National qualifications (N3-N5). These courses will help develop problem solving and data interpretation skills as well as skills for life, learning and work.

Assessment tasks:

For each unit there will be a unit assessment, scientific investigation as well as homework tasks which will help pupils to consolidate and apply their knowledge of the unit content.

Homework tasks:

  • Knowledge recall questions
  • Application of knowledge questions
  • Data interpretation
  • Presentation of data eg: line graphs, tables
  • Simple calculations eg: ratios, averages, percentages and percentage change

Homework will be issued at appropriate times within the course to support pupils’ learning. Pupils will be given adequate time to complete all homework tasks. It is expected that pupils should complete homework on time and to a high standard.

National 4 Chemistry

In S4/S5 Chemistry pupils will study three units within each National course

1. Chemical changes and structure

2. Natures chemistry

3. Chemistry in Society

Learners experience

Each of these units will underpin knowledge and understanding required for the National qualifications (N3-N5). These courses will help develop problem solving and data interpretation skills as well as skills for life, learning and work.

Assessment tasks:

For each unit there will be a unit assessment, as well as homework tasks which will help pupils to consolidate and apply their knowledge of the unit content.

Homework tasks: Based on Key area topics

  • Knowledge recall questions
  • Application of knowledge questions
  • Data interpretation
  • Presentation of data eg: line graphs, tables
  • Simple calculations eg: ratios, averages, percentages and percentage change
  • Revision for Unit assessments (UASPS)-Unit assessments must be passed in order for pupils to achieve the required national level.

Homework will be issued at appropriate times within the course to support pupils’ learning. Pupils will be given adequate time to complete all homework tasks. It is expected that pupils should complete homework on time and to a high standard.

National 4 qualifications are not graded, but will be assessed as pass or fail.
