In the Computing Department, we believe Computing Science is vital to everyday life — socially, technologically and economically; it shapes the world in which we live and its future. Computing is embedded in the world around us, from systems and devices in our homes and places of work, to how we access education, entertainment, transportation and communication. Understanding computational processes and thinking is also vital to many other fields, including science, economics, business and industry. While many learners will want to become computing professionals, all will benefit from the development of these foundational skills and the underpinning knowledge necessary to meet the needs of society today and for the future.

Computing Science Dept Homework

Computing Science is a practical subject and as such we spend a lot of time solving problems and creating digital solutions on computers.

In recent years, we have also taken a 'blended learning' approach and have introduced the flipped classroom. This is where pupils take notes at home and complete practical tasks, questions and group work in the class with the teacher there to help. We feel that this approach makes the best use of our time and gives the most support to pupils.

Therefore, most of the homework given in Computing Science will consist of pupils making their own summary notes on the topic that they are going to study in the week ahead.

This is what pupils should typically expect for homework:

  • S1 - Once a fortnight.
  • S2 - Once a fortnight.
  • S3 - Once a week.
  • N4/N5 - Once or twice a week.
  • Higher/Advanced Higher - Twice a week or more.

 

S1 - S3 Computing Science

In S1-S3 Computing Science, pupils are given a taster of a variety of different streams of Computing, from Word Processing to Computer Games Development to allow them to further develop their Computing Skills.

National 4 COMPUTING SCIENCE

Purpose and aims of the Course

Computing science is vital to everyday life — socially, technologically and economically; it shapes the world in which we live and its future. Computing is embedded in the world around us, from systems and devices in our homes and places of work, to how we access education, entertainment, transportation and communication. Understanding computational processes and thinking is also vital to many other fields, including science, economics, business and industry. While many learners will want to become computing professionals, all will benefit from the development of these foundational skills and the underpinning knowledge necessary to meet the needs of society today and for the future.

Entry Requirements

To gain entry to this course an N4 course recommendation is required.

The Course

: Software Design and Development – the aim of this Unit is for the learner to develop basic knowledge, understanding and practical problem-solving skills in software design and development. Learners will develop basic computational thinking and programming skills through practical tasks using appropriate software development environments across a range of contemporary contexts.

: Information System Design & Development - the aim of this Unit is for the learner to develop basic knowledge, understanding and practical problem-solving skills in information system design and development. Learners will implement practical solutions using appropriate development tools to create databases, web-based information systems, multimedia information systems (and/or hybrids of these).

: Added Value Unit: Computing Science Assignment - this Unit requires the learner to apply skills and knowledge from the other Units to analyse and solve an appropriate challenging computing science problem.

Assessment

To achieve the National 4 Computing Science Course, learners must pass all of the required Units including the Added Value Unit.

Progression

Successful completion of this course may lead to further studies at N5 level in:

Computing Science

or to a number of opportunities, from further education in Computing Science or related areas to employment and/or training (Computing, IT, Science, Banking, Offices, Retail, Insurance Companies, Graphic Design, Engineering, Electronics, etc.).

Learners will develop their programming and computational thinking skills by implementing practical solutions and explaining how these programs work.

: Information System Design & Development - the aim of this Unit is for the learner to develop knowledge, understanding and practical problem-solving skills related to information system design and development through a range of practical and investigative tasks. Learners will apply computational thinking skills to implement practical solutions using a range of development tools and to develop an understanding of the technical, legal and environmental issues related to one or more information systems.

: Added Value Unit: Computing Science Assignment - this Unit requires the learner to apply skills and knowledge from the other Units to analyse and solve an appropriate challenging computing science problem.

Assessment To achieve the National 5 Computing Science Course, learners must pass all of the required Units including the Added Value Unit.

HIGHER COMPUTING

This Higher course aims to provide you with knowledge and understanding of present computer concepts and their potential in the future. The course involves a mixture of theory and practical methods, including further studies in software development, research into modern computing equipment, artificial intelligence, and the uses of the Internet. The course develops the practical skills and understanding of computing necessary in the present day working environment, or in further education.

Entry Requirements :

To gain entry to this course an A or B pass at Intermediate 2 Computing is required.

The Course :

  • Computer Systems– deigned to develop knowledge and understanding of the principles of computer systems and provide an opportunity to apply this knowledge through the use of contemporary hardware and software.
  • Software Development– this unit will extend your practical skills in, and your knowledge and understanding of the software development process. It provides the opportunity for you to implement features of a selected software development environment, use its facilities and apply systematic approaches to produce a software solution.
  • Artificial Intelligence – this unit will develop a knowledge and understanding of the concepts and techniques associated with artificial intelligence. Practical skills will be developed, including creating expert systems, and evaluating various forms of artificial intelligence. Problem-solving skills relating to artificial intelligence will also be developed.

Assessment :

  • Coursework 30%
  • Examination 70%

Progression :

Successful completion of this course can lead to a number of opportunities, from further education (Advanced Higher, HNC, HND, and Degree) to employment (Computing, IT, Science, Banking, Offices, Retail, Insurance Companies, Graphic Design, Engineering, Electronics, etc.).

Core Skills :

The Higher Computing course gives automatic certification in the Core Skills of Critical Thinking, Planning and Organising, Reviewing and Evaluating and IT at Higher level.
