Physics

Physics qualifications give learners an insight into the underlying nature of our world and its place in the universe. From the sources of the energy we use, to the exploration of space, Physics covers a range of applications of the relationships that have been discovered through experiment and calculation.

The school offers Physics at the following levels:

S3 Physics

During the course 3 units will be covered

  • Universe and Everything
  • Electricity and Electronics
  • Electricity and Magnetism

Each unit of work will be assessed using an end of unit test. Pupils will also be issued with three homework exercises per unit. These exercises will help consolidate and develop the pupil's knowledge and understanding and problem solving skills. Pupils will also be expected to carry out a research task that will help develop their literacy and research skills needed for National Level courses.

National 4 Physics

During the course 3 units will be covered

  • Dynamics and Space
  • Electricity and Energy
  • Waves and Radiation

Each unit of work is divided into a number of Key Areas of learning. Pupils will be assessed at the end of each Key Area. Successful completion of each Key Area will lead to the award of a unit pass. Pupils will be issued with homework designed to consolidate and develop their knowledge and understanding and problem solving skills.

National 5 Physics

During the course 3 units will be covered

  • Dynamics and Space
  • Electricity and Energy
  • Waves and Radiation

For each unit of work, there will be an end of unit assessment. To prepare pupils for this assessment, regular homework will be provided, designed to consolidate and develop their knowledge and understanding and problem solving skills. There will be at least one formal homework every 2 weeks. In the National 5 exam, pupils will be expected to answer open-ended questions. To reflect this, some homework questions will contain unfamiliar content that requires the pupils to apply their knowledge of work they have covered in class.

Higher Physics

During the course 3 units will be covered

  • Our Dynamic Universe
  • Electricity
  • Particles and waves

For each unit of work, there will be an end of unit assessment. To prepare pupils for this assessment, regular homework will be provided, designed to consolidate and develop their knowledge and understanding and problem solving skills. For Higher there is usually one formal homework exercise every week. In the Higher exam, pupils will be expected to answer open-ended questions. To reflect this, some homework questions will contain unfamiliar content that requires the pupils to apply their knowledge of work they have covered in class.
