BBC Young Commentator
On Friday 29th April, BBC 5 Live visited Whitburn Academy to promote the BBC Young Sports Commentator of the Year Competition. The Team from BBC 5 live were joined by special guests: former St Kent's pupil, ex Raith Rovers player and former St Mirren Manager, Danny Lennon and Sports Psychologist Steve Turnbull. During Tutor and period 1, they gave a presentation and motivational talk all of S1 and S2.
Over the remainder of the school day, 4 small groups of S1/S2 pupils visited the 5 Live Media bus, which was parked up in the school car park for the day to try their hand at commentating, either on a goal scored by Wayne Rooney for Manchester United or of Rory McIlroy's British Open Golf winning putt.
Through commentating and the preparation that was needed, the pupils learned a number of important skills including: being prepared, research and communication skills, all of these also being important skills to have. The pupils had a fun time commentating and it is fair to say that we definitely have a number of budding John Motsons and Jacqui Oatleys here in Whitburn!
As part of the event, Chloe and Elena, two of our S2 pupils, were interviewed live on BBC 5 Live about their thoughts on the event and had their commentaries played out live to the nation!
Thanks must go to the BBC 5 live team, Danny Lennon and Steve Turnbull for the time they spent working with our pupils.
